How to care for your baby’s hair and scalp

Your baby’s hair will change a lot during her first year so you have to make sure you look after it.

How to Care for his hair and scalp

Both the hair and scalp are sensitive and prone to dryness and breakage. Babies are born with fine and soft hair called Vellus hair. This is eventually replaced by terminal hair which is much thicker and stronger. But until this terminal hair comes through her hair and scalp need special care to keep it healthy.

Washing

Baby’s hair is so thin that it is easily prone to breakage and damage. Over washing hair every day can strip away natural oils of the scalp leaving hair dry. Your little one’s scalp isn’t very oily in the beginning so there’s no need to wash every day. Washing once or twice a week maximum with a mild baby shampoo will be enough to keep the scalp and hair protected.

Combing

Detangling baby hair is a big part of keeping it healthy. Gently comb her hair to help avoid breakage but only do it when the hair is wet otherwise it’ll cause more damage. Try combing through a small amount of lotions or oils to help moisturise both the hair and scalp.

Moisturising

Look for baby shampoos with natural oils in them such as; jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oil or avocado oil. These are all rich in natural oils and mild enough for baby hair and scalp. Our ranges of Baby Haircare products are enriched with coconut, almond and avocado oils to nourish delicate hair.

Cradle Cap or Dandruff?

At around 3 months old you might notice yellow flakes on your baby’s scalp and in her hair. Although it looks like dandruff, it is most likely going to be cradle cap. Cradle cap is yellow crusty scales that appear on baby’s scalp. It is unknown what causes this skin condition but it shouldn’t cause her any bother. However, cradle cap is a bit unsightly so to get rid;

  • apply baby oil or lotions
  • leave for 20-30 minutes
  • gently brush out flakes

Don’t brush too hard, the flakes will become more irritated so make sure you are gentle.
